"Una Corda" is the name of the shift, or soft pedal on a piano. Not to be confused with 'En Acuerdo', the spanish for 'in agreement' or 'Un Cuerdo' which means 'one string' in Spanish

Una Corda is a non-profit, volunteer organisation, founded and funded by members of Ireland’s music community, that works to train and equip the young Cuban piano tuners and technicians that Cuba badly needs.

The piano players of Cuba face challenges that musicians in Ireland can scarcely imagine. It’s an island famed around the world for its music, but in a climate that is particularly hard on strings and wood, Cuba’s pianos need plenty of tender loving care. But pianos are not always a priority on an island raked by hurricanes and struggling to overcome the effects of years of the US trade embargo... For more click here.

 


A documentary about the early days of the project was screened in this year's Galway Film Fleadh, and is due to be screened in the inaugural Irish Film Festival in Havana later this year. Find out more ...


Una Corda were delighted in February to welcome Minister for Foreign Affairs Micheál Martin to the project’s headquarters in Havana. Minister Martin said that he regarded the Una Corda as “a good example of the cultural bonds existing between the two nations, which can be developed even more, particularly in the sphere of music”. A BIG THANK YOU TO EVERYONE WHO CAME ALONG TO THE UNA CORDA BENEFIT CONCERTS IN CORK AND DUBLIN DURING THE SUMMER. BOTH NIGHTS WERE SOLD OUT AND THE ATMOSPHERE WAS ELECTRIC. AND OF COURSE A HUGE 'GRACIAS' TO CHUCHO AND THE BAND FOR GIVING US TWO NIGHTS OF UNFORGETTABLE MUSIC... AND REMINDING US WHY WE ARE HELPING THE NEXT GENERATION OF CUBAN PIANISTS !
